Looking forward to popping in during the next few days to see what supplies Urchin has to offer....

Check them out if you get a chance and let us know what you thought of the store....we are hoping the store will fill a gap in the art supply industry locally in St. John's. Thanks to Shannon for setting up shop!

Reflections on Cod

Several members of Arts Northeast will be taking part in the Reflections on Cod exhibition being held at Five Island Gallery, Tors Cove from July 2 - 27, 2012.   July 2nd is the 20th anniversary of the cod moratorium in Newfoundland and Labrador.  The moratorium has had a huge impact on the culture and livelihood of many people in Newfoundland with 20,000 people suddenly out of work, the largest industrial closure in Canadian history.

This exibition was inspired by the story of the fishery in this province - a story about how a once thriving cod fishery and its demise impacted individual fishers, their families and communities.

Though time has gone, the memories live on - memories that we hope will be captured in paintings, sketches, textile art and sculptures. In this juried show we welcome two- and three-dimensional contemporary works that tell a piece of the story of the Newfoundland and Labrador Fishery, before and after the cod moratorium.
Joan Roberts, Michelle Whitten LaCour and Jeanette Jobson have pieces in this show and would love the opportunity to meet you on Sunday at the official opening.  Its suggested that you park at the church and walk the short distance to the gallery.

The public reception will be held on Sunday July 8th from 2 - 4pm, with opening remarks by Richard Cashin.  This exhibit will feature more than 40 original works by local artists including watercolour, acrylic and oil paintings, pastels, ceramics, gyotaku,  mixed media, hooked rugs and art figures.
