ABOUT THE ARTIST
Michelle Whitten LaCour is a visual artist residing in St. John's, NL. While Michelle has painted a variety of subjects during her twenty five year art journey, she is best known for her vibrant watercolour florals. Her brilliant handling of the medium and keen observation allows her to exquisitely interpret her subjects. Michelle credits her lifelong photography passion and love of gardening with developing her vision for her subjects.
“I love exploring a subject using my camera. Macro photography allows me to capture minute details I would otherwise miss with my near sightedness. My garden is blooming with the flowers I love to paint, thereby enabling me to study the stages of their growth and in various light conditions. My goal is to capture their beauty.”
Michelle is continuing her art exploration with encaustic, a ancient method of painting with pigmented wax that is fused to a substrate with heat. “I am excited about this new method of painting. The fluidity of the medium, the smell of the beeswax, and the fusion of layers to create texture are taking my artwork in a new direction.”

Five Island and Ocean View Galleries
Five Island Gallery in Tors Cove is now open for the season. Ocean View Gallery in Carbonear is open year round. These two galleries will carry a selection of my encaustic work. Encaustic describes a method of fusing hot pigmented wax to a substrate. It is a very exciting medium and I plan on devoting myself to learning all about this ancient way of painting! Here is an example of one of the pieces available at Five Island. It is entitled Rogue Wave.
ANE's newest exhibition is this Saturday!
Here is a sneak peak at one of my paintings for our newest exhibition on May 2nd, 2015 at the Hampton Inn & Suites on 411 Stavanger Drive in St. John's from 10 -5. This is a watercolour of the magnolias in my garden. Image size is 14" by 21". We would love to see you there! It promises to be a "Burst of Colour"!
Almost Ready
This is a sneak peak at one of my small paintings for the upcoming "Exploring Our Roots" Exhibition and Sale happening October 5th, 2014 from 10 - 5 at Hampton Inn & Suites on 411 Stavanger Drive. It is titled "Auntie May's" and it isone of the oldest houses in my hometown of Petty Harbour. I passed this house, with Auntie May in the window, every day on my way to and from elementary school.
May Art Challenge
Well, anyone who knows me would know that this would have to be my favorite food. I don't have a sweet tooth, but a sour one. These tangy beauties look good enough to eat (or garnish a margarita). This was my first experience completing a realistic painting in encaustic. Quite the challenge. And still my watercolour experience managed to surface.
You can see this 6" by 8" painting and others at the MUN Botanical Gardens in St. John's during the month of June.
